Is 'setting' Adapt paste necessary for a secure ostomy bag?

This topic is about finding the best way to secure an ostomy bag, especially when dealing with a stoma that sits in a skin fold. The person sharing their experience has found that using Hollister Adapt Stoma Paste is the only method that prevents leaks for them, as other products like rings have not worked. Their routine involves applying the paste to the wafer, attaching the pouch, and then using a warmed gel pack over the area while lying flat to let everything "set." This method was recommended by a hospital nurse, but they are questioning if the heat-and-rest step is really necessary.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. If your current routine is working well to prevent leaks and your skin remains healthy, it might be best to continue with it. Ostomy care is very personal, and what works for one person might not work for another.

2. As an alternative to using a warmed gel pack, you could try using a low-temperature heat gun on the wafer. After warming, massage the wafer firmly so it molds into the skin folds. Make sure the area is very dry and clean, possibly using witch hazel, before applying the wafer.

3. You might want to experiment with Adapt Barrier Rings or similar products from other manufacturers. These rings can be stretched or stacked (using two rings) for extra protection, which might help you avoid using paste altogether.
