Recovery Progress and Stoma Incision Healing Time?

This topic is about the recovery process after having a colostomy reversal and how long it takes for the former stoma site to heal. The person sharing their experience is 15 weeks post-reversal and is generally doing well, but they have a few concerns and questions.

- They are experiencing pink drainage and soreness at the closed stoma site and are using a guard to manage seepage.
- They are managing pain with 8 extra-strength Tylenol daily and have chosen not to use opioids.
- Their bowel function varies, with some days being loose and others hard to pass.
- They have a surgical follow-up scheduled for the next day.
- They are curious about how long it took others for their stoma incisions to heal completely so that a guard is no longer needed.

Updates from the person include:

- By week 5 post-reversal, the incision was fully healed with no more drainage, and they could sleep on their left side again. However, they still feel heaviness in the abdominal muscles.
- Bowel movements are now smaller and more frequent than before the obstruction.
- There is ongoing mild pain beneath the incision, and they hope the heaviness will go away in another month.
- They emphasize the importance of maintaining a positive outlook and sharing successful outcomes to counter negative stories.

Advice and insights from others include:

1. One person mentioned that their bowel habits and incision comfort returned to "fairly normal" about 2–3 months after their reversal.
2. It's important to consult with a surgeon about any persistent pain or drainage to rule out infection or other issues.
3. Preparing for surgery by getting into the best possible physical shape and maintaining a strong, positive mindset can aid in recovery.
4. For those who are active and have a stoma, whether pre-reversal or permanent, StealthBelt support belts are highly recommended for comfort and discretion.
5. Community members encourage staying positive and sharing success stories to support others who are considering or awaiting reversal.
