Relocating ostomy an inch down - experiences and advice?

This topic is about someone who has been living with an ileostomy for 12 years and is considering having their stoma moved about one inch lower. The current placement is right at the pant or belt line, causing discomfort and frequent leaks due to rubbing and partial coverage by clothing. The person is curious if others have had similar experiences with stoma relocation and what the recovery process is like, as well as whether the increased comfort is worth undergoing another surgery.

Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. Consider trying clothing solutions first:
- Opt for pants with suspenders, wide elastic waistbands, adjustable or lower waist styles, boiler suits, one-piece coveralls, or fashion cuts that sit below the waist. These options can help eliminate belt pressure without needing surgery.

2. Weigh the option of surgical relocation carefully:
- It's important to have a thorough discussion with your surgeon and an ostomy nurse. They might advise against surgery if non-surgical solutions are effective.
- One person shared their experience of successfully moving their stoma about an inch lower. They did encounter a ventral hernia seven years after the operation, but it was repairable, and life became more comfortable post-relocation.
- Another person highlighted the importance of pre-operative marking and planning, which led to a positive experience. They support the idea of requesting a move if it will provide a permanent solution.

3. Emotional and psychological encouragement:
- You have every right to seek comfort and should not hesitate to ask about your options. The worst that can happen is being told "no."
- Hearing about others' experiences can give you the courage to approach your doctor and discuss your concerns.
