Hi,
my stoma is quite high (above belly button) & I was wondering what the men on here wear when swimming. It is not really practical to wear high waistband swimmers (would look REALLY stupid)

Hope you get some replies Wyle cos I'm interested in what guys do too!  It's easy for us girls cos we can just chuck on a one-piece and off we go.  I know in Oz you could wear a "rashie", like a mesh t-shirt thingie that keeps off the sun and the stingers, and surfers wear them so definitely cool!  I think it's called a rashie cos it prevents the "rash" caused by surfboards.
And I have seen plenty of guys wear t-shirts into the water, sun protection being a huge factor here (maybe not so much in Britain!).

Hope you find an answer, nothin' like taking a dip!

Fay,

I am one of those few people who still have a lot of output at night. However, I suffer from short gut syndrome after seven bowel surgeries that led to the loss of much of my small intestine as well as my large intestine from the initial bowel cancer surgery. It does get better over time as your system adjusts, but an ileostomy can be a challenging adjustment. It's important to connect with a good Enterostomal Nurse - ET nurses who can help you problem-solve over time. It's been five years since my initial surgery, and I had a great visit with a new ET nurse in December. He really helped me with the problem of high output at night. I had been getting up every 90-120 minutes to empty my high output bag because of filling. If I slept for three hours without emptying, I would have problems. My ET nurse helped my husband and me make a nighttime collection system using a Rubbermaid juice container with a handle and my old CPAP hose. This is connected to one of my two-piece high output bags and allows for continual drainage. It isn't pretty, but it has been a real lifesaver. I guess the real message I want to share is to stick with it, find a nurse who you can work with, and together you will find solutions to whatever challenges you face. This website is also an important support for me and others. There is nothing you will go through that others haven't already faced and figured out. There is so much wisdom here. Read the materials they've put together for newbies. There are a lot of great suggestions to use. I hope things get better quickly for you.

Urostomy Guy

Hi, go look at my pictures (Urostomy Guy) and check out what I use. I use a womans plain Tube Top Bra made from polyester and spandex( Dont laugh it works very well and nobody knows what it is) I wear it for swimming, tanning and when ever I need to. I orderer from eBAY, but be carefull what you order, I have 36" waist and use a womans XL, the reason I said be carefull what you order is; the one size fits all (s,m,l,xl ) is to tight if you need a XL size, if your waist size is 34" or smaller the one size fits all should be ok. I looked for a womens XL size only and order Black only, because the lighter and brighter colors white, yellow, light blue, red and etc. are very transparent and the bag showes through them like a sore thumb, black hides it very well and if anybody should ask why are wearing that black band around your waist? I say I had a small surgery and I am keeping it dry. I hope I had some good advice for you and anybody else who reads this. Sorry if I rambled on to long. If you or anybody has any questions please contact me.

Hey Whyle I surf and swim lot and as my ostomy is not as high on the body as yours I can hide my pouch behind my board shorts or under my wetsuit. But I have to agree with Jo's suggestion regarding the rashie or what can be termed sun protection vest also.

These tops are not only great when surfing on a board but are worn by many people to keep sunburn at bay and are very comfortable. So comfortable, health conscious and and privacy for you all rolled into one. Winner!!

Good luck and have a great time.

hi there, going swimming in local pool and all l use is my short type trucks . my urostomy is quite high aswell same level as navel , if l had one !! l just wear my trucks quite high and use the tie the cord so it won't slip down . some flanges are bigger than other and you could cut the top edge a bit that would help too .
these days l don't think it matters to much if you show a bit of your flange especially if the pool is busy.  hope you manage to do some swimming one of the best things you can do .
good luck .
