Stoma Revision Surgery Experiences Needed

Hey all, happy weekend 😁

Next Friday, I’m having my stoma revised due to it being flush with my skin & the associated torture that it comes with.

The surgeon wasn’t sure if she’d need to place it elsewhere or just take more out and leave it where it is.

The skin under my stoma is raw and painful all the time. The skin is turning black under my stoma, just a small area.
Have any of you had a revision and how did it go? If you needed a different placement, what was the reason.

Thanks in advance!

No revision but I may need one so I'm looking forward to answers.

I had a relocation of my stoma because it was at my waistline and I couldn't wear a bag. Now my stoma is up higher, higher than my belly button, kind of high up actually. It works better for me but is harder to hide. I can't wear shirts that are too soft because the bag sticks out. I can just wear t-shirts and longer sweatshirts.

I didn't have a revision, but my initial stoma is very high up also. I can relate to not being able to wear tops that are made of thin material. And it sucks because the summers here are brutal!

I have just resigned myself to the fact that that's just the way it is!

Isn't it a shame!

Be confident in asking them to pull it out...as a first plan.

If your Dr relocates it to the other side, there should be enough to also pull that through an inch.

Ask her some questions.

Pull out...1st option.

2nd... Relocate, where? And pull?

How much is she going to leave to avoid a flush stoma again?

Be aware if it is done at the same site it will be larger in diameter. If relocated, make absolutely sure the appliance will attach to a flat area well away from any folds or creases in the abdomen.

That’s her first plan, to pull it out more. But depending on what’s happening, she may need to relocate it.

Understood. Good luck. It's important she knows that u know what you'd want.. this pull out will require less recovery time instead of a relocated stoma. 👍

I've lost weight and now my abdomen looks horrendous.  Will they do a tummy tuck and a revision at the same time?

I should mention it’s a different surgeon. The original surgeon can’t be trusted so I’m seeing a Harvard trained doctor. I will be at BIDMC in Boston, so I’m fairly confident that I’m in great hands.

Thank you 🙂

Will you pay for the tummy tuck? 😋 They go in, fix what needs to be repaired, and they get out. Should discuss the tuck with Quack (DOCTOR).

If the issues like loose skin interfere with your ability to keep an ostomy appliance on, I'd think they could justify it with insurance but they will need to check.

If it is purely cosmetic, you will likely have to pay for it.

You'll need to ask your surgeon if he will do it or if he can bring in another surgeon.

Edit to add: I know of another lady who got a tummy tuck along with removal of part of her colon and creation of a colostomy.  So I'd think it is possible to do together. She was in England so government paid.

G-Day Anne,

Did it all go well? What is the outcome?

Hello Iggie 😊 I am doing well! There was no need to relocate; she just pulled it out more.
Feeling better already!

Thanks for checking in; that was very nice.

I hope you're doing well these days.

Susan, this ended up being much easier than anticipated. She just pulled it out more and restitched the area.
I should be going home tomorrow, so long as I'm doing a bag change independently.
Is there a particular reason you may get a revision? If it's flush and causing issues, I highly recommend!

Best of luck to you 😊

My urostomy is an "innie." I've been managing so far, but if it keeps retracting, it will eventually cause problems.

Currently, I am dealing with complications from my surgery last August, and my surgeons are unwilling to do anything until that is resolved.

I am so pleased it all went well for you, and yes, I am doing OK also.
