My Mom is a recent ileostomate (about 6 weeks since surgery). She is 81 so my sister and I are helping Mom get healthy again. We have a stoma nurse that visits us twice a week. Today she came and noticed a small leakage that was just starting. it was under the flange. the plastic flange was separateing from the bandage itself. She thought moms underwear was pushing upward toward the flange and the force actually separated it. Now Mom is very nervous about her underwear and elastic waistbands destroying the seal. Has anyone else experienced this? We use Hollister convex wafer- 2 piece system and a eakin barrier ring.

Very helpful

Happened to me a few times at first, especially when the nurse was coming over and helping out.  I use the same system and found the most important thing is after cleaning well, really getting the area well with the adhesive remover, couple applications.  Wipe with wet cloth and dry again.  I then use the Stoma Powder around the area, big help.. Wipe it all off and cover area well with the skin barrier.  Make sure the skin is flat and dry before sticking the appliance on.  And yes, I highly recommend the ring.  Good luck, takes practice..

Hi Deb,

As you can see, the outpouring of love and support from this website will help you to find the strength to lift yourself up and out of your current emotional situation. I am lucky to have my husband by my side through all of this, so I will not even pretend to know how you feel and what you're going through alone. I do know that I have great friends on this site and in my life that have been by my side, and hopefully you have many by your side as well. You do have a lot of new friends here. Please feel free to talk through anything that is on your mind. We all go through a confidence deficit when we go through an ostomy surgery. Our body has been marred and your mind feels that way sometimes too. It is tough to move on, but you will. You will be stronger once you realize that you are still the beautiful woman you were prior to your surgery. Hopefully, you can reach out to a local support group and find some additional friends in your same situation. It always helps to have a sounding board wherever you find it!

sounds to me like the product itself failed, the small pressure created by the waistband shouldnt cause any trouble. if it happens again, try a different box of flanges.
