Excessive Output Staining - Seeking Advice

This topic is about managing the challenges of having a colostomy, particularly when dealing with thick, sticky output that requires frequent pouch changes. Here are some helpful tips and insights to make life a bit easier:

1. Output Consistency and Diet
- Try to increase your intake of natural fiber and review your overall diet. Thick, sticky stool is often a result of a diet high in carbohydrates.
- Be aware that certain foods can change the color of your output, like beets or spaghetti sauce, but staining is usually just cosmetic.

2. Reducing "Pancaking"
- Keep some air in the pouch by blowing into it before applying or using a straw through the tail end before closing the clip.
- Avoid wearing tight clothing that might compress the pouch and cause stool to get trapped at the wafer.

3. Lubrication Inside the Pouch
- Add a few drops of baby oil, mineral oil, or cooking oil each time you empty the pouch. Using an eye-dropper can make this easier.
- After adding oil, gently massage the pouch to ensure the interior is well-coated.

4. Cleaning Between Changes
- Rinse with a little water each time to remove most residue. Remember, staining on the plastic is just cosmetic.
- Using a 2-piece system allows you to remove the pouch for rinsing or replacing without disturbing the wafer, which helps protect the skin around your stoma.

5. Wear-Time Expectations
- Many people with ileostomies or colostomies change their wafers every 3-5 days. Pouches can last several days to weeks unless issues like filter failure, odor, or staining occur.

6. Consider Irrigation for a Colostomy
- If you have thick output, irrigation once daily or every other day can significantly reduce unplanned stool and the need for frequent pouch changes.
- The process takes about 40 minutes, is painless, and there are many helpful demonstrations available online.

7. Filters
- Pouch filters often stop working after the first use. Replacing just the pouch when a filter fails can help extend the life of the flange.

8. Product Check
- If you received clear, thinner bags instead of the opaque ones you ordered, contact your supplier or manufacturer to confirm the correct product number and material.
