Concerns with Suppositories and Enemas for Rectal Discharge

This topic is about managing rectal mucus discharge after having an ostomy. If you've had an ostomy and are dealing with mucus from the rectal stump, you might be wondering if using suppositories or enemas is a safe way to handle it. Here are some helpful points to consider:

1. If you're worried about pushing material further inside with suppositories or enemas, it's good to know that the rectal stump is usually sewn shut. This means that using suppositories or low-volume enemas won't push anything deeper.

2. Mild saline or water enemas, as well as glycerin suppositories, can help soften and expel mucus plugs safely, as long as you don't experience any pain.

3. Mucus discharge often decreases over time. Some people notice improvement after a few months, while others might still experience some drainage or urges even years later.

4. Keep an eye on any changes. If you notice a sudden increase in drainage, experience pain, develop abscesses, have a fever, or feel a blockage, it's important to seek medical attention as these could be signs of an underlying issue.

5. If you frequently have mucus plugs or severe infections, it might be necessary to consider surgical removal of the remaining rectum or anus, known as a proctectomy. Many who have undergone this procedure report being free of symptoms afterward.

6. If you're experiencing recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs), it's a good idea to discuss this with your doctor. Sometimes, pelvic infections or residual disease can worsen both mucus production and urinary issues.
