Bag Failures, Blistered Skin, and White Patches on Stoma - Urgent Advice Needed!

This topic is about someone experiencing urgent issues with their ostomy bag and stoma. They are dealing with multiple bag failures, skin irritation, and unusual white patches on their stoma. They are unsure if these problems are due to a flare-up of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) or a faulty batch of bags. Here are some helpful pieces of advice and insights for managing these issues:

1. Seek immediate professional help:
- Call NHS 111 for urgent advice if you're in the UK.
- Contact your general practitioner (GP) or an ostomy/stoma nurse as soon as possible. Many supply companies have on-call stoma nurses who can assist.

2. Consider the possibility of a fungal or yeast infection:
- Nystatin powder, which requires a prescription, is often used to treat fungal infections. Apply it to the affected area before reapplying your pouch.

3. Explore alternative skin-healing options:
- Calamine lotion can help soothe weepy and irritated skin.

4. Address issues with appliance adhesion:
- Damaged, wet skin can prevent appliances from sticking. If possible, leave some skin uncovered to allow it to dry and heal.
- A Nu-Hope Non-Adhesive Barrier, which is an O-ring held by a belt, can protect the stoma while the surrounding skin recovers.

5. Understand potential causes of white patches on the stoma:
- Hyperkeratosis or pseudoverrucous lesions may result from chronic contact with liquid output. Improving drainage and pouch fit can help.
- Exposed lymphatic tissue is usually benign.
- True fungal plaques on the stoma are less common but possible, especially if you are immunocompromised.

6. Recognize signs of disease activity:
- Some people experience similar white, scab-like lesions on the stoma during Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis flares. These lesions may slough off, bleed, and then recur.

7. Know what is normal:
- A clear, slimy wet surface on the stoma is normal mucus secretion and not a cause for concern.

8. Seek additional support:
- Post a request for urgent help on the UK IA (Ileostomy & Internal Pouch Association) forum to access local resources.
- Create an attention-grabbing post title, such as “Need Nystatin in UK Immediately,” to find nearby members who might have spare medication.
