Does anyone have problems with drinking alcohol? I used to love a good glass of wine and an occasional cocktail, but I find that I suffer from leakage if I drink alcohol at all (I am an ileostomate).

I have an ileostomy as well and enjoy a beer or two on occasion with no bad effects.

Doesn't every guy leak after drinking alcohol? 😁

Hello fellow ostomates, my life has changed since I met this wonderful French Canadian lady on this site on 3-17-2013. We were married on 12-20-2014 in Phoenix, AZ.

Ileo here 9 yrs. No issues with drinking. (hiccup).😊

Me thinks you're saying you leak only when you drink alcohol? 🤔.

Something isn't right there, hon.

What type of appliance are you using? Is there a barrier ring and/or belt-to-bag/flange?

Let's see what others say.

Hi Braveticker,

Like Warrior, I'm not understanding why the only liquid you drink that causes a leak is alcohol? That just doesn't make much sense... unless you're saying it causes a lot of output in a short amount of time and your bag overfills. Alcohol is a diuretic, so it will promote fluid loss... while beer and wine can cause bloating and generate a bunch of gas your bag surely won't like... and anything sugary is going to really increase your output as your body dumps water and sodium to try to dilute that. Let us know what you mean by causing a leak... is it excess output, gas, or just rapid filling... and maybe we can pinpoint what's going on.

;O)

Thanks,

Bob

Alcohol can whet the appetite and increase output, as pointed out by some here. I used to wonder why barbecue joints were so crowded late at night. It's the folks having a blast earlier in the evening. People are jollier and louder at a party where alcohol is served compared to one that isn't! Sometimes, after my surgeries, I used to be quiet and subdued at a party; one stiff drink and the words flowed smoothly.

Ileo, no problems. My dad had an ileo; I know it made his output high, and I have known others to say it makes them have loose or high output. It's just how it goes with stomas; what's right for one is wrong for another.

Hi, when I have a blockage, or I suspect I might have one, I drink a glass of wine. My intestines react strongly and get to work. That could explain a leak.

Do I drink wine? Yes, I do, during dinner, for example, but I do always eat well with it and empty the bag more often.

Are you leaking because you have liquid output after you drink? Or are you leaking because you are not able to put your bag on securely? Do you have leaks at other times as well or only when you drink?

No, that’s not what I mean. I’m not saying that I only experience leakage when I drink alcohol. What I'm trying to say is that drinking alcohol, even just a beer, worsens my leakage issues. I also have problems with leakage at other times, such as when I eat spicy food, which I really enjoy.
