Can I safely eat potato skins with an ileostomy?

This topic is about whether it's safe to eat potato skins if you have an ileostomy, especially since some people with an ileostomy avoid certain food skins to prevent blockages. Here's some advice and insights shared by others:

1. If you're trying potato skins for the first time, you might start with mashed potatoes that have finely-mixed skin. The smaller pieces could be easier to pass.

2. People's experiences vary widely. Some with an ileostomy peel potatoes completely, while others can eat any food without issues.

3. Potato flesh, not just the skin, can thicken your output, so you might notice a firmer consistency.

4. Chew your food very thoroughly. Poorly-chewed potato or skin might pass through intact, causing discomfort or a brief blockage, and could even exit forcefully when changing the pouch.

5. Start with a small amount and monitor how long it takes to pass through your system. If you don't have any problems, you can gradually increase the amount.

6. Digestion often slows down as the day goes on. Many people find they tolerate fibrous foods better in the morning and need to chew even more carefully later in the day.

7. Some people find that baby red potato skins and tomato skins don't break down but do pass through without issues.

8. Drinking water with your meal can help move thicker foods through your system.

9. One person with a 20-year ileostomy has no problems with potato skins or even popcorn, but does experience short, partial blockages from cooked spinach and nuts. This shows how individual responses can differ.

10. A general tip is to practice moderation, chew carefully, and stay hydrated when trying any new or previously troublesome food.
