No, not the force Luke, I'm not your father.. lol

Your stoma??

The strangest thing is that I actually feel it when the stoma is touched. I thought it was my imagination as I was told that there are no nerves in the stoma..

So i did a blind test...

Looked the over way, closed my eyes and covered them. And I could still feel it when my wife touched the very top of my stoma, and not with so much pressure that I could feel the skin at the base of it moving.. the softest of touches and I could tell each time🤔🤔

I think i must be a mutant, I'm thinking of joining the X-Men as StomaTony, my super power?

Being able to tell if a baddie touched the very top of my stoma whilst I was blind folded.. 🤔🤭🤭🤭🤭

I'm sure i would be accepted by the X-Men, i mean, how could I not be with that power??

🤣🤣🤣🤣

Tony,

Don't believe everything people tell you........most people are morons or just slightly smarter. Your bowels are PACKED with nerves! So many that they have their own name.........the Enteric Nervous System, which the medical folks call our second brain!! It's what controls pretty much everything about digestion and has more neurons than your spinal cord. Your actual bowel won't exhibit pain until it's stretched beyond its normal limits. So you can stick your finger in your stoma and feel around all you want, but when we get obstructed........it tells us big time. Just don't forget to wash your finger after you're done.

I began my Urostomy life February 27th, 2023...a month and a half ago. I stumbled upon this site from another on Youtube and website called VeganOstomy and between that site and this one, most of my fear and worry of not having any answers other than calling the Dr's office recording menu and hoping to hear back in the next day or two for an answer to leaks, skin irritations etc, or just feeling alone and the "no one understands" thoughts I had to look forward to in my mind were all put to rest by these two websites and the community here at MaO!! I have been here for a few weeks now, and the help and support offered by the members here is just amazing!! The information and support is absolutely priceless for anyone recently out of their surgery and have tons of questions or had it for years...sit down...have a good read and you will see for yourself!!

Generally, my stoma is in its own little Idaho. It does what it's supposed to without me even realizing it. What it do feel is a weight in the bag once it's carrying a bit.

Sometimes I can feel output passing through but it's just a sensation, no pain or anything.

I can feel mine, if I touch it. Sometimes I feel a sensation when output is coming out, but often feel nothing.

I had heard that about second brain but I didn't even put 2 and 2 together.. yeah, makes sense now.. I knew I could feel it.. only just but none the less..

I told the guy at my consult the other day. He looked at me like I was stupid.. 🤔🙄🙄🤣

If someone told you there are no nerves in your ileum, they were not a medical professional. Or if they were, they slept through some classes. There are plenty of nerves in your stoma, just not as many as in your fingers, etc. Just do what I once did and Nick it with a razor. Plenty of ouch and even more blood. :-)

No not if I touch my stoma but it I bash it like I did on a shopping trolley today yes or one of nieces jumps on my stomach like they do quite often when I'm playing them up 🤣...standard advice most ostomy nurses I've been in contact with say you have be very careful not to knock stoma because you can't feel anything I just see it as they care about us and to warn us to be careful just as we should be as its always a possibility our stoma could be harmed if they were hit hard.

Thank you Mose & Ben

I'm really careful not to knock it and so far I've been OK.. I was thinking of following your advice Mose, then I thought.. "you know what, I'm NOT going to do that" 🤭🤭🤭🤭

I appreciate the replies guys, thank you

The 'feeling' response needs to be muted - but YES - in the moment and when focussed [inc in the blind test ' situation a touch or approach can be FELT ........... but it can also be [as is its need to be] on another muted level, for we would have a hard time for a pervading awareness all the time ................. and that goes for most of our physiology ..... except in areas where we ARE designed to be ultra sensitive , that is!

Always acknowledge one's own perceptions.

The medics ..... whilst they emperically know - as Bob rightly points out - often 'operate' in an auto pilot response of what ever the current line of western medicine has emperically taught ....... Which is an ever expansive dictionary - thankfully!
