Ileostomy and dry skin - any tips?

This topic is about dealing with generalized dry skin after having an ileostomy. A person who is 70 years old and has had an ileostomy for a year is experiencing extremely dry skin all over their body, which is surprising to them despite their efforts to stay hydrated. They are curious if others with ileostomies have similar experiences and are seeking advice on effective moisturizers or remedies.

Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. For body-wide dryness, try using Udderly Smooth "cow cream" (it comes in a white jar with black spots). Many people have found it effective, even during chemotherapy treatments.

2. Pure organic coconut oil can be a great remedy for dryness. It is available in the food aisle in jar form. You can apply it to your skin or scalp. Some people use it on their dry scalp, while others apply it after showering, wait a bit, and then remove any residue with an unscented baby wipe before reapplying their pouch.

3. For hands, O’Keeffe’s Working Hands cream is recommended. It’s the same cream the original poster uses, and others have also found it helpful.

4. General skin-care tips include applying a rich hand cream or any highly absorbent, non-greasy moisturizer immediately after showering. Some people find this more effective than prescription emollients, except for targeted steroid creams like "Lodaid."

5. The dry indoor air during winter, often due to furnace heating and static, can make dryness worse. Increasing the humidity in your home might help alleviate this.

6. While maintaining a high fluid intake is important, it may not completely prevent external dryness, as noted by several members.
