Best Soap for Stoma Skin Care?

This topic is about finding the right soaps and cleansers that are safe and effective for taking care of the skin around a stoma. The person who started the discussion is curious if there are soaps specifically made for this purpose, as they are aware that using just water is often suggested. They are also wondering if using a fragrant soap, like a "sexy-smelling man soap," is okay after experiencing a stoma bag leak.

Here are some helpful tips and advice:

1. General guidelines:
- Choose products that are fragrance-free and do not contain added oils, moisturizers, lanolin, cocoa or shea butter, or creams. Make sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid any residue that might affect the adhesion of the stoma wafer.
- While warm water alone works for many, using soap can help remove natural skin oils and improve the barrier's sticking power if rinsed well.

2. Recommended bar or body soaps:
- Ivory bar soap, which is additive-free and widely available in the U.S.
- Dial bar soap, recommended by several nurses.
- Dove bar or "Dove for Men," but avoid those with extra moisturizers like cocoa or shea butter.
- Aveeno bar or body wash for very sensitive skin.
- Unscented Goat’s Milk Soap.
- aSorbolene (non-soap) beauty bar by Velvet/Pental Ltd, which is dermatologist-tested and fragrance-free, available in Australia.

3. Shampoos that can be used as skin cleansers:
- Head & Shoulders dandruff shampoo, as the zinc helps maintain healthy peristomal skin and discourages yeast.
- Tresemmé Deep Clean or Equate "clean" shampoo, which are plain formulations without added conditioners.

4. Specialty ostomy cleansers and medical products:
- Hollister Skin Cleanser Liquid Spray, Product #7210, a thin pump-spray soap available for some Australian users.
- Enzymatic Rain odor eliminator and skin/stoma cleanser, available in the USA.
- Dial Antibacterial Hand Sanitizer (foaming), used by a long-term urostomate to prevent skin issues related to seepage.

5. Castile and natural liquid soaps:
- Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Soap, Tea Tree variety, which can be diluted as per the bottle's directions and helps remove adhesive and paste.

6. Tips for removing adhesive and paste:
- Dr. Bronner’s Castile Soap with a washcloth can effectively remove Hollister Adapt paste and other adhesives.
- Some people prefer thorough washing with shampoo or soap, while others use adhesive-remover wipes or sprays.

7. Additional insights:
- Shaving around the stoma is easier with a small amount of plain shampoo or soap applied first.
- Availability of products may vary, and some people order their preferred soaps online if local stores do not stock them.
- While it might be tempting, heavily perfumed or "sexy-smelling" soaps are not recommended as they can affect wafer adherence due to added oils and fragrances.
