Fashion Advice for Ileostomy - Non-Stretch Clothing Alternatives?

Fashion can be a fun and expressive part of life, but it can also present some unique challenges if you have an ileostomy. If you're trying to figure out how to wear non-stretch clothing, like jeans, comfortably and stylishly with your pouch, here are some helpful tips and insights:

- Consider the location of your stoma. If it's below your natural waistband, most clothes, including skinny jeans, might work. If it's higher, you might want to try high-rise or elastic waist options.

- When it comes to pants, think about size, rise, and cut. You might find it helpful to go one size up in rigid denim or opt for high-waist styles. Some brands that have received good reviews include LL Bean for high-waist jeans, Curve Appeal stretch jeans, and Duluth Trading Company for cargo pants. Overalls, suspenders, and elastic-waist or pull-on trousers can also be good options to avoid belt pressure.

- To keep your pouch comfortable, you can let it hang freely between your underwear and pants to avoid pressure. Alternatively, you might wear it outside the waistband and use a support wrap or hernia belt to keep it secure.

- There are specialized garments and accessories designed for ostomy wearers. Comfizz offers support underwear that is soft and supportive, allowing you to wear skinny or slim clothing. OstomySecrets provides wraps, "ostomy panties," men's underwear, and support belts, though their sizing tends to run small.

- For general dressing, leggings, loose jeans, sundresses, tunic tops, and stretchy fabrics are great starter options, especially while healing. Layering with a sweater or jacket can help camouflage any ballooning. For long trips, loose dresses or skirts can provide extra room for expansion.

- In the shower or while swimming, a cheap shower cap can be used as a pouch cover, which can be a cost-effective alternative to commercial shower belt products.

- When it comes to underwear, many people continue wearing regular boxer briefs, briefs, or panties. You can add pads for extra protection if needed. Ostomy-specific underwear is optional and can offer extra support, though it may be more expensive.

- It's reassuring to know that many people have returned to their pre-ostomy wardrobes with just a few minor adjustments, and most people won't even notice the pouch under your clothing.
