First social outing success! Share your stories!

This topic is all about sharing experiences and tips for attending social events after getting an ostomy. It can be a big step, but many find it rewarding and confidence-boosting. Here are some helpful insights and advice from those who have been there:

- One person shared their experience of attending a Bluegrass concert, which was their first big outing since surgery. They felt more secure by leaving a backpack in the car with all the necessary supplies for a pouch change and a change of clothes. They also opted to use a nearby gas station restroom for better ventilation instead of the event's portable facilities. This preparation helped them enjoy the event without anxiety and feel ready for more social activities.

- Many people agree that the first outing is the hardest, but once you take that step, socializing starts to feel normal again.

- Ostomy bags are designed to be secure, so you don't have to worry about unexpected leaks, explosions, or odors. Being in public is usually no different from being at home.

- It's a good idea to carry a long sweater, jacket, or similar item as an extra layer. This can help you feel more comfortable if you ever need to conceal a leak while finding a restroom.

- Packing a small go-bag with essentials like a spare pouch, wafers, wipes, disposal bags, and a change of clothes can greatly reduce anxiety. You can leave it in your car or carry it discreetly.

- Personal stories shared include:
1. Someone with a 25-year ileostomy mentioned that confidence returns quickly once you start going out.
2. Another person attended a large New Year’s Eve party just two months after surgery, with only their spouse and the host, a registered nurse, knowing about the ostomy.
3. One individual went to a family reunion on a hospital day-pass while still recovering. This successful outing showed that it's possible to participate in social events even early in recovery.

These shared experiences highlight that with a bit of preparation and the right mindset, social outings can be enjoyable and empowering.
