Leaking from Back Passage: Pain and Stomach Cramps

This topic is about dealing with leakage from the rectum, often referred to as the "back passage," which can cause discomfort, pain, and stomach cramps. This is a concern for many who have undergone ostomy surgery. Here are some helpful insights and advice on managing this issue:

1. After ostomy surgery, it's common to experience mucus discharge from the rectum. This happens because the rectal stump continues to produce mucus even when stool no longer passes through it.

2. If the mucus becomes thick and accumulates, it can solidify, leading to rectal pain. In such cases, it might be necessary to manually remove the mucus, which can be done using a gloved finger.

3. Some individuals may have very little warning before a discharge occurs, leading to frequent bathroom visits. This can happen up to 20-30 times a day, particularly for those who have undergone treatment for rectal cancer.
