I'm helping my MIL, who has an ileostomy. She just had partial hip replacement surgery about 2 weeks ago and is home. She had mobility issues before the surgery, so her recovery is complicated. Today, she says she is constipated, which I take to mean she is not having any output. She's trying to do without her pain meds today, and I suggested some prune juice. What are the current recommendations for relieving this problem? I'm concerned it will become a blockage.

I would say prune juice is a good choice. Personally, a jar of baby prunes works for me.

Perhaps a capful of MiraLax mixed in with coffee or hot tea daily would also help prevent constipation if she enjoys either of those beverages. Of course, you can mix MiraLax in any liquid.

Opioid constipation is such a problem.

What a kind SIL you are to be helping and asking questions.

Others will chime in with suggestions shortly.

Tell your MIL she's a brave lady.

Every morning when I enjoy my big cup of coffee I scroll through this site and this warm feeling just overwhelms me.

I never post anything (too shy and it feels like I don’t have anything of interest to share tbh) but I sure read a lot of posts from you guys and they are so informative, supportive encouraging and so so full of love and a big dose of humor.

I feel like part of the best family in the world (even though I am just sitting quietly in the corner lol).

I just wanted to share that feeling and say thanks to all of you for being so wonderful.

And also, please keep some fingers crossed for me this week. I have my blood test on Thursday, checking my CA 125 levels. Ovarian cancer reoccurrence fear unlocked again. I hate it!

Lots of love from Sweden

Karlie has given great advice. Try using Tylenol instead of the opioid pain meds. Carefully follow the dosing instructions and don't wait for pain to take it. I found it works better if you just keep taking it. The opioids are terrible for constipation.

Great advice from Susan about Tylenol. Opioids caused me to have really bad constipation.

Prune juice is a good choice. I had to take MiraLAX for a while after my hernia repair surgery because of the pain medications. It is best to talk to a doctor first before you give laxatives, though. It can cause dehydration if you don't drink enough fluids, and not just water but electrolyte solutions too.
