Dealing with Ostomy Odor & Noise - Need Advice!

This topic is about managing the challenges of living with an ostomy, particularly dealing with odor and gas noise in public. A new ostomate, just a week and a half post-surgery, is feeling stuck at home due to concerns about loud gas noises and strong odors from their pouch. They are self-conscious and worried about regaining the confidence to socialize. Here are some helpful tips and advice shared by others who have been in similar situations:

1. **Filter and Pouch Adjustments**
- Try covering the pouch filter with a sticker to help block odor and reduce ballooning. Leave a little air inside after emptying.
- If you notice an odor without opening the pouch, the seal or filter might be failing. Consider using a filter-less pouch and "burping" it periodically.
- Request free samples from different manufacturers. Many people have found excellent odor control with Coloplast SenSura Mio pouches.

2. **Deodorants and Odor Control Products**
- Hollister M9 Odor Eliminator Drops come highly recommended.
- You can also try commercial ostomy lubricants/deodorants, Poo-Pourri for the toilet, mouthwash, or even a few Tic Tacs in the pouch.
- Eating greens rich in chlorophyll or taking chlorophyll tablets can help reduce odor internally. Charcoal tablets are another option once you have healed.

3. **Diet and Gas Reduction**
- Identify and limit foods that cause gas, such as carbonated drinks, milk/dairy, certain vegetables like cabbage and beans, fish, coffee, and some convenience foods.
- Use Beano liquid drops before meals that might produce gas for quicker action.

4. **Sound Muffling Techniques**
- Wear thicker outer clothing or use a pouch cover or wrap made of dense fabric like denim or corduroy.
- A Tytex ostomy wrap band or similar abdominal binder can help dampen noises.
- Sitting on a cushioned chair can absorb some sound.

5. **Reassurance and Expectations**
- It's common for the stoma to be noisy in the early post-op period. Most people find that it quiets down as the bowel adapts and medication residues clear.
- Ask a trusted person if they notice any odor, as new users often imagine smells that others cannot detect.

6. **Practical Tips**
- Keep a strong bathroom exhaust fan on when emptying the pouch.
- Carry supplies so you can "burp" or empty discreetly if gas builds up.
- Having a sense of humor and a ready joke can ease embarrassment when unexpected sounds occur.

These tips and insights aim to help you feel more comfortable and confident as you adjust to life with an ostomy.
