Stoma itching - Any tips for using stoma powder without adhesion problems?

This topic is about dealing with stoma itching, specifically when using stoma powder without affecting the adhesion of the barrier ring or wafer. If you're experiencing persistent itching around your stoma but have healthy skin, here are some tips and insights that might help:

1. Stoma Powder Technique
- Use a light dusting of stoma powder. Make sure to remove any visible excess by blowing, puffing, or gently brushing it off. This ensures there are no clumps left behind.
- When applied sparingly, the powder should not interfere with the adhesion of your barrier.

2. Combining or Avoiding Additional Products
- If your skin is healthy, some manufacturers suggest skipping skin-prep or barrier wipes, as these can sometimes reduce the sticking power of your barrier.
- If you use a barrier spray along with the powder, ensure the spray is completely dry before applying the wafer.

3. Investigating Alternative Causes of Itching
- Sometimes, normal stoma activity can feel like an itch but doesn't necessarily mean there's a skin issue.
- Hair caught under the wafer can cause a tugging sensation as the stoma moves. Shaving the peristomal area might help alleviate this.
- Seepage or slight leakage under the wafer can irritate the skin. Using a barrier ring or changing rings more frequently can prevent this.
- Consider the possibility of an allergy or irritation from the adhesive or flange material. Trying samples of different pouching systems or brands might help reduce the itching.
