Dealing with Burning and Redness Around My Stoma

This topic is about dealing with burning and redness around the stoma, which might be due to a yeast infection or other causes. Here are some helpful tips and advice to manage and prevent these issues:

1. **Seal the Stoma-Skin Junction:**
- Use a well-fitting wafer (skin barrier) and pouch system to keep output off the skin.
- Apply a paste like Hollister Adapt Paste as a caulk between the wafer and stoma to ensure a good seal.

2. **Routine Skin Protection:**
- Clean the area thoroughly and dab with Betadine or another antibacterial solution before applying a new wafer.
- Consistent use of this routine can help prevent infections.

3. **Fit and Leakage Control:**
- Measure the stoma periodically and ensure the wafer opening fits closely around it.
- Change the pouching system regularly or immediately if you notice any seepage.
- If leakage continues, consider using accessories like a convex skin barrier, barrier rings, or additional paste.

4. **Treating Irritated or Open Skin:**
- Lightly dust irritated areas with Hollister Premium Powder and stop using it once the skin heals.
- If an antifungal is needed, opt for a powder formulation to ensure the pouch adheres properly.

5. **Tape Sensitivities:**
- If redness or blisters appear under the wafer tape, try switching to a tape-free wafer or one with an adhesive skin barrier instead of tape.

6. **Possible Yeast Infection (Peristomal Candidiasis):**
- Antifungal treatments like Fluconazole orally or nystatin/azole powder topically can quickly clear a yeast-related rash.
- Consult an ET/WOC nurse or physician before starting any oral medication.

7. **Professional Help and Product Resources:**
- For specific skin or leakage issues, contact an Enterostomal Therapy (ET) / Wound-Ostomy-Continence (WOC) nurse at the WOCN Society by calling 1-888-224-9626.
- For products, samples, or technical help, reach out to Hollister Incorporated at 1-800-323-4060 or visit www.hollister.com.
