Dealing with Sliding Flanges Due to Weight Gain

This topic is about dealing with the challenge of a flange slipping after gaining some abdominal weight, which has led to shorter wear times and increased costs. Here are some helpful suggestions and insights shared by others who have faced similar issues:

1. Adjust or use an ostomy belt:
- Many people recommend using a belt or tightening the one you already have to help keep the flange in place.

2. Try Hollister floating-flange systems (two-piece):
- Some have experienced longer wear times, up to three weeks, when using this system with a belt.
- The floating flange might be easier to fit on a rounded abdomen, though some have had issues with the pouch separating from the wafer. It's a good idea to try samples first.

3. Consider a one-piece system:
- This option is appreciated for its simplicity and having fewer parts that might come loose.

4. Manage gas without filters:
- In-bag charcoal filters often don't work well, especially with watery output. Instead, try taking oral anti-gas tablets like Gas-X before meals. These are affordable and can be taken as needed.

5. Use a larger wafer size for better adhesion:
- Switching to a larger wafer size, such as from 1-3/4" to 2-1/4", has helped some people extend their wear time significantly. They also avoid using skin-prep or alcohol during changes and keep the wafer on while showering.

6. Consider skipping filters:
- Many find that filters add bulk without much benefit, so they choose not to use them.

7. Address weight gain and appliance fit:
- Gaining weight can change the angle of the stoma and affect how the wafer fits. While adjusting your diet and increasing activity might help, changing your equipment, like using a larger wafer or a different system, is often a practical solution.
