Hi all, the surgeon recommends parastomal hernia repair. I am getting a second opinion soon from my original surgeon from 12 years ago. Has anyone had a repair, and how were the results?

I've not had a repair, but others have. I do know that the rate of recurrence is high. I was told that they avoid repairs unless they are causing problems. I'm glad you are getting a second opinion.

Thank you for your quick reply. I'll discuss irrigation with my doctor. I'm sure it would be down the road. My output is still very liquid. It's all so unpredictable at 6 weeks post-op. I have such a fear of constipation as I struggled with this forever. I used a fiber source to thicken the stool but it hasn't helped very much. I guess I will continue to be positive but it is a bit of a pain. This website is great and everyone is so informative. Cheryl

G-Day afriendindeed,

Yes, I had a parastomal hernia repair just over 2 years ago, and it's been a great success. My surgeon was old school and did not like mesh, which a lot of surgeons use. He said 1. It can move inside after the operation and cause problems, and 2. they can cause infection. I hope it all goes well for you.

Regards, IGGIE

Is the hernia giving you discomfort or problems? I have one as well, and other than an obvious bulge, which can be flattened with the belt, mine has not caused any issues. I rarely use the belt as it is most uncomfortable for me. I avoid any surgery, hospitalization, doctors, and medication at all costs; however, I admit, pain would thoroughly change my attitude.
All surgeries are major and should be carefully reviewed in terms of the end result….jb

I had a parastomal hernia repair in May of this year. I also had an incisional hernia repair at the same time. It was sore for a couple of weeks for sure. I had ileus too. My stoma fell asleep and didn't wake up. That was no fun. I had to go back in the hospital for that and get an NG tube put in. That was not fun. But as for the hernia repair, I think it was okay. I am not sure it is totally fixed, though. I have a place where my stomach sticks out that I think might still be a hernia. I am not sure. So I don't know. I have mixed feelings about its success. I don't know. I don't have trouble with pouching, so that is good.

I have had 2; the first repair lasted maybe a year. This surgeon had no experience with this type of repair. The second one, with an experienced surgeon who specializes in this type of repair, has lasted since 2006. And yes, I would do it again if needed. The hernia became painful, and my bags would not stick. It was about the size of a huge grapefruit.

I am interested in this also, as I have multiple hernias. The latest CT showed, and I quote, “Complex ventral epigastric, umbilical, hypogastric, and peristomal hernias are present. These contain no unobstructed colon and small bowel segments.” I knew it wouldn't be a simple repair for me, but this is ridiculous!

That is what my surgeon said! I don't know if anyone on here has had this happen. I have an abdominal wound that is non-healing from mesh from bladder surgery years ago. Now I have bloody discharge from my belly button! My surgeon had a scan recently, and I too now have a parastomal hernia. He said unless it causes problems, not to mess with it! I feel like a mummy! Susan, I read your comments and admire what you are dealing with! This site is awesome, and no one but us knows what we all deal with on a daily routine! This site is so helpful!👍❤️😉

This should be seen as a problem. Bleeding from your belly button/open wound, which can result in infection, is not cool.

I would get a second opinion from a surgeon who has experience in this type of surgery.

I agree with Maried. Find an experienced doctor and get another opinion on that open wound. This has been going on too long.
