Stoma & Car Accident - Seeking Advice

This topic is about someone who has an ileostomy and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and was involved in a car accident. After the accident, they experienced severe pain and irregular stoma output. They are seeking advice and insights from others who might have gone through similar situations. Here are some helpful points shared by others:

1. It is important to seek immediate medical assessment. Many people suggest going to A&E, calling NHS 111, or at least contacting a GP or stoma nurse. This is crucial to rule out any internal injuries, partial blockages, bleeding, or adhesion tears, which might require imaging like a CT scan or ultrasound.

2. Be aware of the risk of abdominal adhesions or scar tissue tearing during sudden deceleration. Getting a scan can provide peace of mind and ensure there are no serious issues.

3. When it comes to seat-belt positioning, make sure the lap belt is low and beneath the stoma. While it can cause damage if it rides up over the appliance, not wearing a seat-belt significantly increases the risk of fatal injuries.

4. If the stoma output is dark, it may indicate blood in the bowel, which should be treated as urgent.

5. Do not rely solely on pain medication to mask symptoms. If the pain worsens or there are changes in output, it is important to seek emergency medical review.

6. It is understandable to have emotional or psychological barriers due to past negative care experiences, but these should not delay seeking assessment when experiencing red-flag symptoms like severe pain or possible bleeding.
