Seeking Recommendations for High-Quality One-Piece Bags

This topic is about finding a better-quality 9-inch one-piece ostomy bag for someone who is very active and experiencing leaks, especially at night. The person has been using Hollister bags for many years, but recently they have started to fail much sooner than before. Here are some suggestions and insights that might help:

1. Consider trying Coloplast two-piece systems. Some users have found the SenSura Mio Click to be reliable for over three years. The new Coloplast Mio Convex Flip wafer and Brava securement strips can offer extra security for active users. You might also want to try the Coloplast one-piece with a "flower"-shaped wafer (Ref. 18341) and request samples.

2. Check the integrity and age of your products. Look at the expiry or manufacturing dates on Hollister boxes, as sometimes suppliers might send older stock that has deteriorated.

3. Re-measure your stoma and adjust the opening size. Even a small change can lead to leaks. One person solved their issue by using a wafer opening one size smaller, and Coloplast replaced it at no charge.

4. Evaluate your body position and the consistency of your output. Sleeping flat on your back can cause liquid output to pool around the stoma, affecting the adhesive. If your output is very loose, consider ways to thicken it.

5. Improve mechanical support by using an ostomy belt to keep the wafer tight overnight. Some people find belts necessary only while sleeping or exercising.

6. Inspect your stoma for retraction when lying down. If it flattens against your abdomen, output might migrate under the wafer. Convex products or inserts could help.

7. Change accessory products. Try using Brava Ostomy Paste, which absorbs moisture better and can reinforce the seal. Consider a full sealing routine:
- Clean with mild soap and water, then dry thoroughly.
- Apply Convatec ESENTA Skin Barrier Wipe.
- Fit an Eakin Cohesive Seal snugly around the stoma.
- Apply a convex, mesh-adhesive Hollister one-piece pouch over the seal and press firmly for 2 minutes.
- Lie flat and warm the wafer with your palm for 30 minutes to set the seal.

8. Consult an experienced stoma nurse for a hands-on assessment of your application technique, wafer choice, and accessory use. Even experienced users can benefit from a refresher.

9. If problems continue, take a photo of the appliance after it fails and share it with the manufacturer or a stoma nurse for analysis of where the leak starts.
