Anemia and Low Ferritin Post-Colostomy: Seeking Advice

This topic is about managing anemia and low ferritin levels after having colostomy surgery, which can be a challenging experience. The person sharing their story is 10 months post-surgery for cancer and is still dealing with these issues. They have tried standard iron tablets without success and are now using a liquid supplement called Floradix, gradually increasing the dose. They are under regular medical care but are also looking for advice from others who might have faced similar challenges. Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Work with your doctor to find out the exact cause and stage of your iron-deficiency anemia. It's important to rule out any ongoing internal bleeding and check if malabsorption is a factor. Cancer itself can cause anemia, so understanding the main cause is crucial for choosing the right treatment.

2. Ask for comprehensive testing, such as iron studies, a complete blood count (CBC), and a stool test for occult blood, to determine whether you are in stage 1, 2, or 3 of iron deficiency.

3. Consider trying Ferrous Gluconate 324 mg, which some people find easier to absorb after bowel resection. This has been a successful option for others in similar situations.

4. Look at your diet and see if you can include more sources of absorbable iron, as long as your digestive system can handle and absorb them.

5. Remember that there are two main types of dietary and supplemental iron: heme and non-heme. Consulting a nutritionist who understands the needs of someone with an ostomy can help you find the right type and dosage for your situation.
