High Output Ileostomy Information Scarcity

Living with a high-output ileostomy can be challenging, especially when it feels like there's not enough practical information out there to help manage it. If you're looking for ways to handle excessive stoma output, here are some tips and insights that might be useful:

1. Searching for Information:
- Try using the forum’s search box with the phrase “High Output Ileostomies” to find discussions and advice from others.
- Expand your search to Google. You might find helpful information in medical journal articles, though they can be a bit technical.

2. Strategies to Slow Down Output:
- Consider adding a small amount of dry gelatin dessert mix (pectin) to your food to help thicken the output.
- There is a prescription option called Prevalite powder (cholestyramine) that can be mixed with food or drink to reduce output. Start with small amounts to avoid blockages.
- Antidiarrheal medications like Imodium (loperamide) can be effective. Taking 4–8 tablets daily is common, and getting a prescription can be more cost-effective than buying over-the-counter.
- Adjust your diet by eating bananas and gradually increasing your intake of soluble fiber. Metamucil (psyllium) can be helpful, but be aware it might cause gas.
- Be patient, as output often decreases naturally as your body adjusts after surgery.

3. Important Cautions:
- Introduce any thickening agents or fiber slowly, especially if you are new to having an ostomy or are prone to blockages.
- Always consult with a healthcare professional before making significant changes to your medication or diet.
