Living with Crohn's and an Ileostomy at 27

This topic is about a 27-year-old who has been living with a permanent ileostomy for three years due to Crohn's disease. Initially, they had a temporary stoma, but after a failed reversal, it became permanent. They were first diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2005, which was later changed to Crohn’s disease in 2006 after several surgeries, including an unsuccessful J-pouch. Despite the challenges, they have maintained good health but sometimes struggle with thoughts of "why did this happen?" They focus on staying positive and being grateful for overcoming the difficulties.

Here are some pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. Sharing experiences and humor can help lighten the emotional burden. For instance, one person finds humor in the situation by joking about emptying their pouch on an airplane, which helps them cope.

2. Hearing stories from others who have remained healthy after getting a permanent ileostomy can provide hope and reassurance to those who are newly adjusting to this change.

3. Open conversations and support from peers are crucial for anyone who is mentally struggling after reversal surgeries or while adapting to life with a stoma.
