Wakeboarding with an Ostomy: Tips and My Experience!

This topic is about someone who tried wakeboarding for the first time since getting an ostomy. They used a Stealth Belt and managed to ride without falling, but they did experience a pouch leak afterward. They had to rush home because they hadn't packed extra supplies. The leak was likely due to changing their pouch and wafer that same morning, which didn't give the adhesive enough time to bond properly. Despite some sore muscles from being out of shape due to illness, they found the experience worthwhile and encourage others with ostomies who enjoy wakeboarding, kiteboarding, or surfing to give it a try.

Here are some helpful tips and insights:

1. Allow the wafer or barrier at least a full day to bond before swimming or boarding. Changing it on the same day can lead to leaks.
2. Empty your pouch and wait until your stoma is quiet before getting into the water to reduce the chance of accidents.
3. Warm the wafer, perhaps with a blow-dryer, before applying it to improve adhesion.
4. Always pack extra ostomy supplies when heading to the water.
5. Consider adding whey protein to your diet to help rebuild any lost muscle strength.

Additionally, the person noted that in South Florida, the surf is usually flat, so wakeboarding is a good alternative to surfing. They were surprised by how much muscle mass and strength they had lost during hospitalization, as their entire body was sore for days after riding.
