Struggling with Intimacy Due to Physical Conditions

Managing an ostomy bag during intimate moments can be a bit challenging, especially when dealing with a large abdomen due to a hormone imbalance. Here are some practical tips to help keep the pouch from interfering during these special times:

1. Consider using a stoma cap for short periods when you expect minimal output. Planning meals to ensure the stoma is less active during intimate moments can also help.

2. Try folding the pouch upward and securing it with medical or bandage tape, or tuck it into the fabric flap on certain pouches to prevent it from swinging. Remember to unfold it afterward.

3. Wear a specially designed ostomy belt or wrap. Options include:
- Generic elastic belts or wraps available from medical suppliers.
- The "Secrets Wrap" from ostomysecrets.com.
- The Stealth Belt from stealthbelt.com, which zips the pouch inside and can be worn sideways. It's also great for sports and swimming.

4. Repurpose stretchy clothing items like tube tops, pregnancy belly bands, or similar knit waist wraps. These can help compress the abdomen and hold the pouch flat against your body.

5. If it's medically safe, consider fasting or limiting food and fluids for about four hours beforehand to reduce stoma activity.

6. For a smaller appliance during intimacy, you might want to try Hollister's 7-inch mini drainable or closed-end pouches, or any manufacturer's stoma cap for a lower profile.

7. Here are some general tips for keeping your appliance secure, which can be useful for both intimacy and other activities:
- The Hollister New Image two-piece wafer with a separate pouch can be removed for showering and re-attached after thoroughly drying the wafer.
- After bathing, dry the wafer and surrounding skin with tissue or a cool hair-dryer to maintain adhesion.
- Coloplast SenSura 1-piece systems are known to stay secure through long showers or baths, and using cool-air blow-drying can speed up drying time.
- If you experience leakage after water exposure, consider requesting free samples from different companies like Hollister or Coloplast to find a more secure wafer/pouch combination.
