CLOTHES & STOMAS

The topic is about navigating the world of clothing and fashion after receiving a stoma. It highlights the challenges and adjustments needed to find comfortable and practical clothing options while still maintaining a sense of style. Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by individuals who have experienced this journey:

1. Jeans and belts can be uncomfortable, especially when bending. Switching to suspenders (also known as braces) can help, although waistbands might still rub.

2. Around the house, boiler suits or industrial onesies are a great option. They have a button front for easy pouch changes, are made of tough, easy-to-wash fabric, and don't require a belt.

3. Boiler suits and coveralls come in various colors and lightweight fabrics, available through work-wear catalogues. They can also double as painting overalls.

4. For hernia support, a Velcro-fastened hernia belt can be used, sometimes with a self-made insert to hold the hernia in place. This might add a couple of inches to the waist but can be discreet under clothing.

5. Conventional suits can still be worn if trousers are held up with suspenders instead of a belt.

6. Tight clothes are possible for short periods. It's about trying different options, expecting occasional mishaps, and staying creative. Jogging or athletic pants are currently in style and can be forgiving around a pouch.

7. Suspenders or braces are gentler than belts for keeping trousers up and reducing pressure on the stoma.

8. Boiler suits or coveralls, also known as industrial onesies, offer comfort, freedom of movement, and easy access to the pouch. They are available in various colors and fabrics, from lightweight to heavy-duty.

9. Stoma support bands and commercial stoma-cover belts, about 10 inches wide, are useful when the pouch sits below the belt line and needs to be worn outside trousers. They work well under a suit jacket.

10. Adjustable hernia or support belts with Velcro fastenings allow you to set the exact pressure needed while keeping everything discreetly in place.
