Bladder Issues After Colostomy/Ileostomy Surgery - Seeking Advice

This topic is about the experiences and concerns of someone who underwent an emergency surgery to convert a colostomy to an ileostomy. After the surgery, they have been experiencing frequent urges to urinate and sensations as if they need to have a bowel movement, even though nothing happens. They are curious if these experiences are common among others with similar surgeries. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

- Many people with an ileostomy report feeling the urge to pass stool, which can be accompanied by small amounts of mucus. This is generally considered normal.

- It's important to maintain fluid balance and protect your kidneys. Even without a colon, you need to replace fluids lost through the ileostomy to avoid dehydration and potential kidney damage. If you're hydrating well, you might still have normal to high urine volumes.

- Since the increased bladder activity is new, it's recommended to discuss this with your surgeon or a urologist. It's also a good idea to have your kidney function and blood glucose levels checked, as issues like untreated diabetes or kidney problems can lead to increased urine output.

- Extensive abdominal surgeries can affect pelvic floor muscles, which might influence bladder control. Consulting a pelvic-floor physiotherapist could help in evaluating and retraining these muscles.

- If you experience a stoma that enlarges or protrudes repeatedly, it's important to consult your surgeon or stoma nurse. Some people have tried using caster sugar or ice to reduce swelling, though results can vary.

- If you have a history of radiation treatment, it might have affected your pelvic tissues, impacting bladder and intestinal healing. It's worth discussing any long-term effects with your oncologists and surgeons.
