Is Blood with Mucus Expelled from Rectum Normal? New Member

This topic is about a common concern for those who have undergone a loop colostomy, specifically regarding the presence of blood mixed with rectal mucus. A new member, five months post-surgery for a bowel-cancer blockage, is experiencing this and seeks reassurance from others who have had similar experiences. Here are some insights and advice shared by others:

- It is quite common to see blood-stained mucus in the first months after a colostomy. This is usually not a cause for concern and can persist for many months. Some people report this lasting from 6 to 12 months, and occasionally even longer.

- The blood may appear fresh red or brown, which is coagulated, and the mucus might have an unpleasant odor initially. These symptoms typically decrease as the rectal stump heals and adjusts over time.

- During a digital rectal examination, surgeons often find minor bleeding even when patients only notice mucus. This is generally considered a normal part of the post-operative healing process.

- The frequency of these symptoms can vary widely. Some people experience intermittent episodes for months, others may never see blood, and a few might continue to pass mucus or occasional blood for years.

- If the bleeding becomes heavy, painful, or suddenly increases, it is advisable to contact your surgeon or consultant for an evaluation. This is important to rule out other issues such as hemorrhoids.
