Black and Thin Stool with Double-Barrel Ileostomy - Seeking Advice

This topic is about someone who has had a double-barrel ileostomy for about four and a half months. They recently experienced an unexpected urge to have a bowel movement and passed a very thin, almost black stool from the rectum. This understandably caused them a lot of worry, even though they didn't have any pain or other symptoms. They reached out to see if others have had similar experiences and to find some reassurance.

Here are some helpful insights and advice shared by others:

1. It's quite common for people with both double-barrel and end ileostomies to pass small amounts of stool or mucus from the rectum. This happens because the unused part of the bowel continues to produce mucus and sometimes expels leftover material.

2. The dark or black color of the discharge can often be attributed to old, oxidized blood from surgery that is slowly making its way out. Biological matter can naturally darken over time as well.

3. Many people advised that if there is no pain, active bleeding, fever, or other concerning symptoms, it is usually not something serious. However, it's always a good idea to call your ostomy nurse, surgeon, or general practitioner to get their professional opinion.

4. When the original poster reached out to their medical team, the staff were not worried and explained that it was likely due to residual material, which helped to reassure them.
