Problems with Convatec Wafer for 2-Piece System

This topic is about a common issue faced by users of the ConvaTec 2-piece colostomy system, specifically when dealing with thicker stool. The problem arises when stool collects in the narrow pocket between the wafer's outer and inner lips, which can be frustrating as it requires changing the wafer each time the pouch is changed. Here are some helpful tips and insights to manage this situation:

1. Make sure the wafer and pouch are completely snapped together and sealed. Even a small gap can allow stool to enter the rim pocket.

2. The issue might be due to "pancaking," where stool sticks near the stoma instead of dropping into the pouch. To help with this:
- Try sleeping with your head or torso elevated using a wedge pillow or by training yourself to sleep on your side. This can help gravity move the stool downward.
- If your pouch has a charcoal filter, consider closing or covering it. Reducing airflow can decrease the internal vacuum and help the stool slide away from the stoma.
- Continue using or increase the use of ConvaTec Stomahesive lubricant or another ConvaTec lubricating deodorant inside the pouch.

3. Many people with colostomies change both the wafer and the drainable pouch together every 4–6 days. The main advantage of a 2-piece system is the ability to switch between different pouch sizes without removing the wafer, rather than extending the wafer's life indefinitely. Other brands like Hollister and Coloplast have similar behaviors.

4. If frequent wafer changes are still a concern, you might consider:
- Trying a different ConvaTec pouch style, such as a closed or mini pouch, for nighttime use.
- Switching to a one-piece appliance, which eliminates the rim pocket altogether, if your skin sensitivity allows.

5. Some users of the same ConvaTec 2-piece system report that they simply change the wafer and pouch together every 5–6 days and accept this as a limitation of the system.
