I wish my hands would function well

This topic is about the challenges faced by individuals who have both an ostomy and hand dysfunction, such as peripheral neuropathy. These conditions can make it difficult to perform the necessary tasks for ostomy care, which can be frustrating and anxiety-inducing. Here are some insights and advice shared by others who understand these challenges:

1. Many people with numb, arthritic, or spastic hands find it hard to cut wafer openings, attach bags, and avoid spills. Sharing experiences and using humor can help ease the frustration.

2. It's important to think about the future and discuss plans with partners or caregivers. Having a conversation early on about what to do if self-care becomes impossible can be very helpful.

3. Identify someone who can assist if needed, even if you are reluctant to rely on others. Knowing there is someone willing to help can provide peace of mind.

4. Community support is valuable. Many find comfort and encouragement in forums where they can share experiences and advice, which can be a positive contrast to negativity found elsewhere online.

5. While no specific products are recommended, it's important to choose ostomy appliances that are easy to handle, especially for those with limited hand dexterity.
