Post Colostomy Reversal - Day 4 Update and Progress

This topic is about a person's recovery journey four days after being discharged from the hospital following a colostomy reversal surgery. The individual shares their experiences with pain management, diet, and overall recovery progress. Here are some key points and advice from their update:

- The person has managed to avoid using oxycodone since the previous evening and is taking one 500 mg Extra-Strength Tylenol at bedtime to help with sleep.

- Abdominal gas is still present but is decreasing. The person no longer feels or hears it moving as violently and is passing less gas than the day before.

- They had a bowel movement in the morning that was less watery, although it was still slightly bloody.

- Pain is gradually subsiding but is still noticeable when sitting up, in the rectum, at the stoma-site stitches, and at a 3-inch incision near the former navel. An abdominal binder is helping to greatly reduce discomfort.

- The person is continuing with a low-fiber diet and has eaten more today than on any previous day this week.

- They have chosen not to wear an adult diaper and are making more trips to the bathroom mainly to pass gas and avoid accidents. They are following discharge instructions to not sit on the toilet for longer than 2–3 minutes.

- Occasional shoulder pain, diagnosed as post-op nerve pain, is being managed without prescribed medication.

- Sleeping is only possible partially on their sides, but shifting positions helps move abdominal air out.

- The person is nearing the one-week milestone and is feeling positive overall about their recovery.

Advice and insights from the community include:

1. Keep a detailed written or digital journal of the entire recovery experience. This can serve as personal therapy and as a resource for future patients considering reversal surgery.

2. Continue sharing specific symptoms and progress. Community members find detailed accounts valuable for understanding and support.

3. Encouragement from multiple members: Your steady improvement, avoidance of strong narcotics, and proactive coping strategies are commendable. Stay the course, as recovery pain is to be expected but will lessen with time.
