Struggling with Daily Ostomy Leakage and Skin Irritation

This topic is about dealing with daily leakage and skin irritation caused by a retracted stoma. The person sharing their experience is 74 years old, in poor health, and mostly confined to a hospital bed. They have been struggling with a retracted stoma for the past three months, which leads to constant leakage and skin irritation. They feel depressed and helpless, as they don't have access to a stoma nurse and are seeking advice from the community to stop the leaking.

Here are some helpful suggestions and insights shared by others:

1. Consider surgical revision: Many people recommend consulting with a surgeon. For some, correcting a retracted stoma through revision surgery stopped the leaks and involved a short hospital stay.

2. Use convexity and accessories:
- Continue using or switch to convex wafers, which can help the stoma protrude more.
- Add barrier rings, like Hollister Adapt rings, to fill any gaps if the wafer opening isn't snug.

3. Pay attention to posture and movement:
- Lying flat can cause output to pool around the stoma. Try raising the head of the hospital bed, sitting up, sleeping on your side, and getting out of bed to move around when possible.
- Remember, "You rest, you rust": Regular movement can help reduce leaks and improve your mood.

4. Maintain a routine and hygiene:
- Change the appliance every other day by choice.
- Shower daily and take a bag-free shower on change days to keep the skin healthier and minimize odor.
