Embracing Colostomy Bag Changes with Confidence

This topic is about how someone with a colostomy has grown more comfortable and confident with changing their colostomy appliance. Over time, what once felt like a daunting task has become a routine they look forward to. Here are some insights and advice shared by the person and others:

- The person uses a Hollister two-piece system with a barrier ring and wafer extenders, typically wearing it for seven days.

- They lead a very active lifestyle, including daily jogging, resistance training, and swimming. To manage a hernia while exercising, they use a belt-and-pouch combo with a 6-inch elastic hernia belt.

- On change days, they prepare all their supplies on a tray by a recliner. After removing the old appliance and cleaning the area, they shower without the bag. They then relax in a recliner with the stoma uncovered for up to two hours to let the skin air-dry.

- For daily comfort, they rinse the pouch with tepid water to prevent the weight of stool from being felt.

- They express gratitude for their adjustment and offer support to those still facing challenges with leaks or pain.

Advice and insights from others include:

1. Take your time: Having a scheduled, unhurried routine with all supplies ready can make the process calm and stress-free.

2. Air time is beneficial: Allowing the skin around the stoma to breathe by leaving the wafer and pouch off for a while can be helpful. Some plan to wake up earlier to have more bag-free time.

3. Shower without the appliance: Removing the wafer before showering can make cleaning the stoma easier.

4. Be cautious: If you stay bag-free for a long time, be mindful not to fall asleep, as this could lead to an uncontained output mess.
