Adjusting to My New Colostomy and Increased Gas Noises

This topic is about someone who has recently transitioned from an ileostomy to a colostomy and is experiencing frequent, loud gas noises. They are curious if this is normal and are seeking advice from others who might have had similar experiences.

Here are some helpful insights and advice from the community:

1. Many people with colostomies find that they are naturally noisier than ileostomies. Loud sounds like "toots," "burbles," or "babbling" are common and usually not a cause for concern.

2. The reason for the noise is physiological. The colon, where the colostomy is located, contains gas-producing bacteria, while the small intestine, where an ileostomy is, mostly deals with liquid and produces much less gas.

3. The level of noise can often change with your diet. Certain foods might increase gas production, so adjusting what you eat could help manage the noise.

4. Here are some practical tips to cope with the sounds:
- Gently pat or press the pouch or stoma area to help muffle the noises.
- Use humor or simply explain to those around you so they understand where the noise is coming from.
- Accept that the timing of these noises can be unpredictable. Many find their stoma is quiet until they are in meetings, at the dentist, or at work.

5. It is suggested to contact a stoma nurse or doctor if the gas is accompanied by pain, swelling, or other concerning symptoms. If it's just noise, it is generally considered normal.
