Managing a stomach bug can be challenging, especially when you have an ileostomy. If you're recovering from a bug and still experiencing diarrhea and fatigue, here are some helpful tips to make the process a bit easier:
1. Stick to bland foods. The B.R.A.T. diet, which includes Bananas, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast, is often recommended. It's best to avoid fatty or dairy foods until you're feeling better.
2. Stay hydrated and replenish lost electrolytes. You can do this by drinking oral rehydration solutions like Dioralyte or using commercial electrolyte drinks or powders such as Liquid I.V.
3. Choose small, easily digestible foods. Options like toast, bread, crackers, cream of wheat, plain soup, baked or mashed potatoes, Jell-O, and ginger ale can be gentle on your stomach.
4. Keep an eye on your output. During a stomach bug, your output might become thin, dark green, or black, and your pouch may fill up quickly. It's important to drink extra fluids and consume more sodium to prevent dehydration.
5. Consider temporary supplementation with liquid vitamins. Some people find that "advanced wound care vitamins" help maintain nutrition when their food intake is low. These vitamins can be very sweet but are effective.
