Affordable Ostomy Care Tips and Alternatives?

This topic is about finding affordable and accessible ostomy care solutions in Indonesia, especially for those who might not have access to many of the products commonly recommended online. Here are some helpful tips and insights:

- The person cannot find pouch deodorizers or skin-prep wipes locally, and importing them is too costly. They share a bathroom and want to minimize odors from both the appliance and their body.

- A hospital taught them a "makeshift skin prep" method: covering the peristomal skin with Hypafix tape and then adhering the pouch on top. However, some skin remains raw, and tape removal is painful.

- They are looking for:
1. Cheap or DIY deodorizer options for the pouch and bathroom.
2. Gentler, affordable alternatives to Hypafix or skin-prep.
3. Any other cost-effective ostomy tips.

Additional Information:
- They use Hypafix as a barrier because the pouch adhesive alone did not stick. Pastes and powders available are costly and still leaked within 8–10 hours when the output was very watery after surgery.
- The output is now thicker, so they may try going without Hypafix.
- They are concerned about whether others can smell the pouch while out, feeling anxious despite no leaks.
- They are curious if putting Tic Tacs in the pouch really works for odor control.

Advice and Insights:
1. For bathroom or room odor control:
- Use a general room deodorizer like "Glen 20" (Australia) or any eucalyptus-based spray. Look for similar products available in Indonesia.
- Keep a cheap aerosol deodorant or perfume in the bathroom and spray after draining or changing the pouch. Many find this works as well or better than branded ostomy deodorizers.

2. For in-pouch deodorizer substitutes:
- Drop a few Tic Tac mints into the pouch. Several users report this helps neutralize odor and is food-safe and inexpensive.

3. For Hypafix usage and skin protection:
- If Hypafix is affordable and prevents leaks, it is okay to continue using it.
- Skin irritation is likely from stripping the tape. Use an adhesive remover to lift it gently.
- If commercial adhesive remover wipes or sprays are unavailable, apply coconut oil, wait, then peel off the tape slowly.
- Ensure every trace of coconut oil is washed away with soap and water before attaching a new pouch, as any residue will prevent the wafer from sticking.

4. For alternative cleansing or skin-care products:
- Shampoo containing zinc (like Head & Shoulders) can be used to cleanse peristomal skin and help prevent irritation when dedicated products are not accessible.
