Colostomy Output Issues After Surgery

This topic is about a person who recently had colostomy surgery and is experiencing a decrease in output two weeks after the operation. They are concerned about having to regularly irrigate their colostomy and feel it might not be what they expected from the procedure. Here are some helpful insights and advice for anyone in a similar situation:

- It's quite normal to experience changes in output shortly after surgery. Two weeks is still early in the healing process. A lack of stool isn't usually a problem unless it's accompanied by pain, swelling, or no gas.

- Many experienced colostomy patients see regular irrigation as a positive way to manage their condition.

1. Irrigating every one to two days is common and allows many people to go up to two days without any output, which means fewer bag changes and more freedom.

2. People with ileostomies often have to empty their bags 6–7 times a day and sometimes wish they could use irrigation as well.

- If you can pass gas without discomfort, your colon is likely working fine. It's better to keep an eye on things rather than worry too much.

- Some people find that drinking a strong cup of coffee can help stimulate output if needed.

- Learning how to irrigate soon after surgery is helpful. If someone is assisting you now, with practice, you'll soon be able to do it on your own.

- Embrace irrigation as part of your new routine. Be patient as your body adjusts, and continue engaging in sports and other activities. Many people with colostomies return to full, active lifestyles.
