Mastisol Experience: Keeping the Bag On but Not Perfect

This topic is about managing the adhesion of an ostomy appliance using Mastisol adhesive and preparing for a potential colostomy reversal surgery. The person is dealing with some challenges and has shared their experiences and plans. Here are some helpful insights and advice based on their situation:

- Mastisol adhesive is being used to improve the adhesion of the ostomy pouch. While it helps extend the wear time to about 1½ days, it has a strong odor and can cause some stinging and skin irritation. An appointment with an ostomy nurse is scheduled to address these issues.

- The person is preparing for a possible colostomy reversal surgery. This will only proceed if there is no recurrence of cancer and if their immune system is strong. They are undergoing various imaging tests, such as PET-CT and MRI, as part of this preparation.

- To stay active, they maintain a routine of daily walking, which includes walking through all the aisles and the parking lot at Costco.

- Increasing protein intake is important for the upcoming surgery, but it must be done without worsening gout. They are limited to a small amount of meat each day but can consume plenty of eggs and have added 1–2 Aloha plant-protein bars daily. They are also increasing their water intake.

- They recently had a mammogram and MRI on the same day, followed by PET-CT preparation the next day. They find this process easier than preparing for a colonoscopy but miss having their daily fruit portions.

Here are some additional pieces of advice:

1. To aid healing before and after surgery, increase protein intake. If you need to avoid purine-rich meats due to gout, consider alternatives like eggs and plant-based protein products.

2. Stay up to date with all recommended health screenings, such as mammograms, to prevent any unexpected health issues.

3. Try to avoid scheduling multiple major imaging procedures on the same day to minimize physical stress and fatigue.
