Binder Clips for Fixing Leaky Velcro Pouches

This topic is about a clever way to prevent leaks from Velcro-closure ostomy pouches using mini binder clips. The idea came from someone who experienced a leak with their Hollister two-piece ileostomy pouch. Her husband, an engineer, suggested using a mini binder clip to secure the folded Velcro tail. Since then, she has used a clip on every pouch and feels much more secure. Even her surgeon approved of this method. She found colorful clips on Amazon and keeps extras handy.

Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. The leak might have been due to frequent emptying (more than six times a day) and changing the pouch every two days, which can weaken the Velcro fold.

2. Using a clip is mainly for peace of mind. She is an older Medicare patient and carries spare mini clips in her purse or pocket, which she gets from Dollar Tree.

3. She has never had a clip break, although one did fall into the toilet once.

4. With a loop ileostomy, the output volume and twin vents on the Hollister pouch can increase the chance of seepage.

5. A reversible ileostomy was considered but would not be beneficial for her.

Additional advice and insights from others include:

- Many long-time users report no leaks from Velcro closures when they are fully aligned and pressed. Leakage can vary by brand, hand strength, output volume, and frequency.

- Mini or standard binder clips, also known as fold-back or "bulldog" clips in the UK, are widely used for extra security. They are cheap, colorful, easy to find, TSA-safe, and X-ray safe, but must be removed for MRI.

- Practical tips for using clips:
- String a few clips on a cord around your neck to avoid dropping them in the toilet, which is helpful for those with arthritic hands.
- Keep spares in your pocket or purse and choose a smaller size for less bulk.

- Alternative closures and aids mentioned:
- IGGIE clip, a dedicated ostomy tail clip.
- Rubber bands wrapped around plastic tail clips on older Hollister pouches.
- Blue painter’s tape or micropore tape placed vertically across the tail to prevent seepage, also useful during sports.

- Brand-specific comments:
- B. Braun bags: multiple users report they "never leak."
- Hollister: has the strongest Velcro but can be hard to seal for those with weak hands. Products mentioned include Hollister 18902 swivel-end pouch, Hollister Premier Convex line, and Hollister 8611 pouch (used with a plastic closure clip).
- Coloplast: has a good seal, but stool can foul the two round Velcro pads.
- Convatec: minor liquid can wick into folds; wipes are recommended.

- General leak-prevention advice:
- Be meticulous in aligning the two Velcro strips before folding.
- Older or grip-impaired users may find clips, tape, or non-Velcro systems easier.
- Consult stoma/ostomy nurses for product trials; NHS (UK) and Medicare (US) usually cover standard supplies.
