M9 Deodorant: Miracle or Myth?

This topic is all about Hollister’s M9 Ostomy Deodorant, a product designed to neutralize odors in ostomy pouches. Users have shared their experiences and insights on how it works, its benefits, and some considerations to keep in mind.

- The active ingredient in M9 is disodium cupric citrate, which uses copper ions to neutralize odors by binding with sulfur and amine compounds in waste. Citric acid helps keep the copper soluble.

- The product is latex-free, water-soluble, non-acidic, and non-flammable. It is safe for use with colostomy, ileostomy, and urostomy pouches and tubing, and only a few drops are needed for it to work.

- Users appreciate its long-lasting odor neutralization, lack of perfume, compatibility with pouch materials, and ease of use. However, it hasn't been independently clinically tested, and its effectiveness can be reduced by large amounts of bacteria or waste. Some users with sensitive skin might be bothered by parabens, and copper can stain if the solution leaks. It doesn't prevent odors from leaks or poor hygiene.

- Compared to other odor control methods like charcoal filters, fragranced sprays, absorbent tablets, enzyme products, and frequent bag changes, M9 offers a chemical neutralization that can be used alongside these methods.

Advice and insights from users include:

1. Experiment with the number of drops to find the minimum effective dose, as M9 is highly effective.

2. The blue color is due to the copper ions, not added dye. If leaks occur, they can stain fabric, so treat stains as copper stains. Soaking in vinegar and salt might help, depending on the fabric.

3. M9 can be used with lubricating deodorants to reduce odor and improve stool slide-out without affecting the pouch seal.

4. Other odor control options mentioned include Perfect Ostomy Deodorant, which is a thicker liquid that may avoid leakage and staining, and Devrom tablets or chewables for internal odor control, though they are no longer covered by Medicare.

5. M9 does not contain bleach; the blue color and potential staining are due to copper.

6. Many users describe M9 as highly effective, even calling it "magic" or "the bomb" for its ability to completely eliminate strong odors.
