Esophagram with Barium and Ostomy Pouch Concerns

An esophagram is a medical test that uses a barium contrast to help doctors see your esophagus more clearly on X-rays. If you have an ostomy, you might be wondering how this test will affect your pouch and whether fasting beforehand is safe. Here are some helpful insights and advice from others who have been through it:

1. The material of your ostomy pouch is generally compatible with barium, so the risk of leakage is low. Just make sure to prevent the pouch from becoming too full.

2. It's a good idea to empty your pouch right before the test. Let the nurses or technicians know about your situation so they can pause the procedure if your pouch starts to fill up.

3. Fasting for 9 to 10 hours is a common requirement for imaging tests. Many people with ostomies have done this without any issues, although you might notice an increase in gas.

4. Barium tends to pass through your system quickly. After the scan, head to the nearest bathroom and stay there until most of the barium has passed. Bringing extra water can be useful to rinse out your pouch and help clear any thick residue.
