Will the ostomy pouch be able to handle the barium? I also can't eat for 9-1/2 hours, although I can drink sips of water. Does anyone have this experience and anything I need to know? Is it okay to even go that long without eating? I've seen posted here in 2019 that I might need to empty the pouch during the procedure.

Thanks.

Yes, the bag can handle it. Don't let it get too full, as that will put more pressure on the base plate and cause a leak. It won't be a problem not eating; I've done it many times. You might get more wind.

Great site..I have had an colostomy over 30 years..and have been thru skin rash around my stoma,hernias(2), leaks, odor control , needed clothing suggestions and this site has helped me with recommendations and many ideas worked!
I wish it was around 30 years ago. Thank you everyone!

I've frequently had to go that long without eating. It was not a problem.

Make sure you empty your pouch before the procedure and make sure the nurses and technicians are aware of your pouch and the need to empty it when it gets half full.

Yes. I have had procedures using barium. The barium goes through the digestive system quickly, so my advice is to alert the technician and locate a bathroom available at the end of the procedure. Make a beeline for that facility and stay there until you have "gotten rid of" the barium. It may take a while, and bring a container of water to rinse out the bag. Good luck, and I hope the test goes well.
