Latex Allergy Causing Itching with New Two-Piece Bag?

This topic is about dealing with severe itching around the tape of a two-piece ostomy appliance, particularly for someone who has a known latex allergy. The person switched from a one-piece to a two-piece system to solve leakage issues but now faces intense itching where the tape contacts the skin. Here are some helpful insights and advice:

1. Consider the possibility of a tape or adhesive allergy rather than latex in the wafer:
- Many people experience similar itching due to sensitivity to the tape or adhesive.
- If the itching starts within hours, it might be an allergic reaction.

2. Try different systems or brands:
- Consider a one-piece system without extra tape, like the Dansac Nova, to avoid the irritant.
- Some users have found relief with Hollister appliances using an Eakin Seal and Dermacol Collar.
- The Convatec two-piece with Moldable Technology wafer has worked itch-free for some.
- A Coloplast 14175 one-piece with a 4" Hollister barrier ring has kept skin clear for another user.

3. Experiment with different securing methods:
- Zinc-oxide–based waterproof tape has been effective in hot climates without causing irritation.
- Paper tape around the flange edge can be gentler on the skin.

4. Use skin-prep techniques to reduce itching:
- Clean the area with mild soap and water, then rinse thoroughly.
- Lightly dust Stomahesive Powder and seal it with AllKare Protective Barrier Wipe, allowing it to dry before applying the wafer.
- For severe rashes, a doctor can prescribe Nystatin/Nystop powder.
- Over-the-counter 1% hydrocortisone can help with severe itching, but it may affect adhesive sticking.

5. Manage moisture:
- Keep the flange area dry, as moisture can worsen the rash.
- During showers, protect the appliance area with plastic wrap or a cut-out washcloth barrier, then dry thoroughly.
- Test different tapes/adhesives on both wet and dry skin to find the least reactive option.

6. Seek professional help:
- Consult an ostomy nurse or contact the manufacturer’s helpline for advice on product alternatives and skin-care protocols.

7. Remember that individual responses vary, and finding a comfortable appliance may require trying different brands and accessories.
