Bleeding Ulcers on Stoma: Could It Be Crohn's?

This topic is about someone who has noticed small, bleeding ulcers on their stoma and is concerned that it might be a sign of Crohn’s disease affecting the stoma. Here are some helpful pieces of advice and insights shared by others:

1. Get it checked: It's important to show the stoma to a gastroenterologist or an ostomy/stomal therapy nurse to determine if it's Crohn’s or something else.

2. Normal for some: People who have had ostomies for a long time and have Crohn’s disease mention that similar small ulcers can appear, bleed, and then go away without causing serious issues.

3. Soothing and cleansing:
- Rinse the stoma with aloe vera juice during pouch changes.
- Allow the skin around the stoma to air out briefly between pouch changes if possible.

4. Diet and lifestyle adjustments that might help reduce ulcer activity:
- Cut down on spicy foods and carbonated drinks.
- Include more yogurt in your diet for probiotics.
- Try to lower stress levels.

5. Skin protection and supplies:
- Sprinkle a small amount of stoma powder on the bleeding spots before putting on a new appliance.
- Make sure the flange isn’t cutting into the skin, especially if hernias have changed the shape of the abdomen. Consult a stoma nurse for a refitting if needed.

6. Sticky issues: Be aware that fresh aloe gel from a plant might affect how well the wafer sticks. If you use it, make sure to clean the area thoroughly before applying the pouch.
